The Geographic Information System (GIS) is a collection of geographic data for capturing, managing, analyzing, and displaying all forms of geographically referenced information.
Geographic information is represented as a geographic database (geodatabase). Graphical data contains simplest graphical primitives (points, lines, polygons etc.) making up a map. Statistics data includes information from the database.
Now there are some types of GIS:
– table;
– corporative;
– geographical Internet portal (web-service).
In July 2006 the Government of the Penza Region held a competition for purchase of the regional electronic map. The map with the scale 1:200,000 contains next levels:
– Borders of the region;
– Borders of the districts;
– Settlements;
– Highways;
– Country roads;
– Railways;
– Bridges;
– Forests;
– Rivers;
– Lakes;
– Electricity Transmission Lines (ETL);
– Oil Pipe-lines;
– Gas pipe-lines.
The GIS elaborated on the basis of the United Information Space of the Penza Region is a regional geographical Internet portal. There is a number of services available for a user having internet access (it may be any town-dweller or villager):
– detailed elaboration of the map;
– objects search;
– displaying information about an object;
– management of levels visibility.
